What is Gastric Bypass?
Gastric bypass is a type of bariatric surgery performed by reducing the size of the stomach and rerouting the digestive system. This surgery achieves weight loss by reducing the volume of the stomach and bypassing part of the small intestine. As a result, patients feel satiated with less food and the body’s absorption of nutrients is reduced.
Process Stages
- Evaluation and Planning: In the first stage, a detailed interview and health assessment with your doctor will determine whether you are suitable for gastric bypass surgery. You will be informed about the risks and benefits of the surgery.
- Preoperative Preparation: Necessary medical tests are performed before the surgery and the general health status of the patient is evaluated. Preoperative diet and exercise recommendations are given.
- Surgical Procedure: Gastric bypass surgery is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia. During the operation, the stomach is turned into a small pouch and part of the small intestine is connected to this pouch. This procedure usually takes 2-4 hours.
- Recovery Process: The postoperative recovery process starts in the hospital. Patients are usually kept under observation in the hospital for 3-5 days. Full recovery may take several weeks.
